How Eggologic Bird Nester Pods Can Turn Your Garden Into a Safe Haven for Birds
According to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), the bird population in the UK has been on a steep decline since 1970, mainly due to habitat loss.
While that’s a sad truth, the DEFRA statistics are all the more worrying because birds play a crucial role in the food chain and the health of the birds is a key indicator of an environment’s overall well-being. So seeing a decline in the bird numbers is a sign that our environment is taking a major hit.
But we have good news: You can make a difference right in your backyard!
Bird nester pods and houses are an easy and effective way to create safe nesting spots for birds that have lost their natural homes. Whether it’s your balcony or backyard, you can help protect our beautiful friends by giving them a place to thrive.
This article shares information about how the Eggologic Bird Nester Pods can transform your garden into a sanctuary for cavity-nesting birds.
What is the Eggologic Bird Nester Pod?
Created with the help of renowned ornithologists, our Nester Pods mimic the cool, sheltering safety of tree hollows. They act as a nursery for birds to nest and lay eggs, or simply offer safety from bad or frigid weather.
Eggologic’s Bird Nester Pods are made to bring a slice of nature to your backyard, balcony, or rooftop. They can be set up on their own or as part of a vertical gardening system!
The Design Philosophy
We spent years field-testing our pods in varying climate conditions across three continents. This helped us perfect our Nester Pod design into a nurturing, airy, and low-moisture enclosure that your local birds will love nesting in!
Here’s a bit more about the unique build and design of the Bird Nesters:
-
Anti-predator: We intentionally removed an entrance perch to deter predators and competitive species.
-
Multiple entry guards: Our Nester Pods include not one but four different entry guards (28mm, 32mm, 38mm, and 43mm sizes), making it easy to customise them to the species you see most often in your area! Plus check out this handy European bird guide!
-
Climate optimised: The pod comes with a replaceable, biodegradable insert made of pressed wood fibre pulp. It mimics natural wood cavities by helping to regulate humidity and providing thermal insulation. The strong outer shell and replaceable inner shell duo create a climate-optimised home for your native feathered friends.
-
Built to last: A robustly crafted HDPE outer shell and stainless steel hardware make sure the pods will become a long-lasting (and stunning) feature in your garden.
-
Simple to maintain: Birds need a clean space to build their nests, but cleaning and repairing wooden birdhouses at the end of the winter isn’t anyone’s favorite task. With our Nester Pods, you simply remove the old biodegradable insert and replace it with a fresh one!
What are Our Bird Nester Pods Made From?
Our goal is to restore natural ecosystems, so there is no way we would use anything that hurts the environment! We picked 100% recycled, BPA-free HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) as the star material for these bird nesters.
A type of resin, HDPE is known for its high strength-to-density ratio, combining impressive strength and weather resistance in a lightweight body. Snow, rain, or wind, HDPE beats it all.
Oh, and did we mention it’s also mould-resistant? Keeping birds healthy and disease-free starts with keeping mould far away.
Of course, high-strength HDPE is just the outer layer. Housed inside is an all-natural chamber made of 100% wood fibre. This first-of-its-kind replaceable insert provides a dark, insulating environment that cavity-nesting birds love. And when the nesting season is over, replacing the wood fibre insert is literally a snap!
Sure, the birds will still have to build their own nests, but our Nesting Pods make the job easier for you and safer for the birds than a typical wooden nest box.
The Eggologic Expert
Our pods were designed and tested with the generous guidance and help of leading researchers such as Stratton Hatfield.
As an Ornithologist, photographer, and bird guide, Stratton wears many ‘hats.’ He’s passionate about birding and conservation. Hailing from the Netherlands, Hatfield is currently pursuing his PhD in Wildlife Ecology & Conservation. His research on the Martial Eagle ecology frequently takes him to Maasai Mara, Kenya.
