Biodiversity in Every Home: Our Journey So Far

Biodiversity in Every Home: Our Journey So Far

It started in March of 2020 with a rather ambitious question: how can we turn every city balcony and backyard, no matter the size, into a haven for local biodiversity?

And how can we do it in a way that’s easy, fuss-free and sustainable?

Challenge accepted.

For the past few years, we've brainstormed and built something from scratch to turn this into reality. After countless prototypes, endless tinkering, and more than a few sleepless nights, our gardening and wildlife Eggologic Garden Pods are ready for the world!

It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. Today, we’re sharing that journey with you.

Where Eggologic Began

Developing a team of passionate gardeners with experience in design, engineering, and science definitely gave us an edge. Armed with the right pool of skills, we got working on our goal: to develop a range of garden and nesting pods to help people grow vertical gardens in their backyards!

When it came to choosing the core material, we unanimously picked 100% recycled High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) - a hardy, durable resin with an impressively low carbon footprint, making it perfect for our sustainable goals.

Now, to move from idea to product, we needed realistic prototypes. The initial Nester and Planter pod prototypes took about a month to complete. This was also when we decided to ditch the steel frame in favour of a lightweight one.

Confident in our early prototypes, we knew it was time to stress-test them by collaborating with experts. We reached out to ornithologist Stratton Hatfield, whose invaluable input helped us finalize and produce the Type 1 prototype for our Nester Pod. By January 2021, we were ready for testing!

The Field Testing That Spanned Three Continents

To see how our prototypes held up in different outdoor conditions, we decided to cast our net wide — three continents wide! The Type 1 Nester Pod tests conducted in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Kenya drove us to modify the fastener system to one that didn’t need screws.

Next, we spent the next three months testing and refining the design of our Type 2 Nesters and Planters. An insert was added to the Planter, while the Nester got an extra canopy to reduce sun and heat exposure.

During this time, we also designed the Hive—a nesting pod for bees! We were thrilled to receive botanist Drew J.'s approval for our Type 2 Planter design, along with a rundown on plant species that’ll thrive in it.

Still, our design refinement continued - this time for your experience. We decided to integrate the rear frame, shell, and fasteners into a single design.

In February 2022, renowned biologist Jackie S. helped us deploy our Type 2 Nesters in the U.S. and Sweden. By June, we were delighted to see the pods housing a range of local birds, including bluebirds, blue tits and swallows.

But as they say, good things take time.

Our field testing stretched until July 2022. We knew we had to go the extra mile to ensure our pods enriched nature and our customers' lives. Thankfully, the testing results were good enough to give us the confidence to jump into the next phase: manufacturing!

Where Eggologic Is Today

We spent the next eight months reviewing and recreating the design for the mold and the Nester insert, and in April 2023, the mold fabrication began.

In June of 2023, the first samples of the Nester pod were produced using HDPE and we started to get excited! We handed them over to the on-site team for another round of testing but it we found a couple issues with the Pod’s dual-face design - so we went back to the drawing board.

But finally in August of 2023, a modified single-face Nester pod passed all of our tests with flying colours!

We repeated this process with the other pods, starting with mold making and producing the first HDPE samples. By April 2024, all mold revisions to improve functionality and aesthetics were finished!

From there, it only took us a few short months to finalise the designs for the Nester, Trellis, and Planter Pods. And in August of 2024, the first small batch of Eggologic Garden Pods will finally be shipped to our warehouse, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for September!

The Hive and Variety Pods are still being finalized to make sure that the experience is as simple and seamless as possible for you and the bees.

The Eggologic journey kicked off during a raging pandemic. Four years later, we are proud of the work we’ve done and excited about getting our Garden Pods into your hands!
